Having a good time at a march relies solely on who you are marching with. In a quiet clump? Stand to the side and wait for some drummers or folks with a boombox to come along. Join them! Find yourself lost in a contingent screaming "The Empire is Breakin', Follow Bob Avakian!"? Courteously fall back.
On a gorgeous Spring Saturday, families of organizers and organizers of families got together for the "Imperialism is Bad for Children" contingent to be apart of the large United for Peace and Justice-initiated antiwar march. The crew set out to finally make some space for young children and people with children, in a notoriously inaccessible setting for them: crowds marching mad slow for miles on concrete.
With red balloons, strollers, baby slings, mini juice boxes, snacks, and red, black and green flags and cookies (!), the Third World families contingent stepped off of Broadway and 22nd st. only a couple hours after the start of the march (waiting to start walking is prob the most heinous thing about demonstrations). We had drumming, dancing, sage-burning, breastfeeding, diaper-changing, and lots-o-drooling!
Chants of choice: (Note: we had tons, some of which I don't remember or did not understand:)
-El pueblo unido, hamas cera vencido (the people, united, will never be defeated)
-Move Bush, Get out the way! Get out the way Bush, get out the way!
-1, we are the people; 2, a little bit louder, 3, we want justice for the third world
-Ain't no power like the power-uh-duh-people cuz the power-uh-duh-people don't stop!
-Stop. Drop. People gonna rise to the top. O-oh, No-oh, Bush has got to go-oh.
-Bush lies, tell'em hell no...gotta go cuz the people said so!
-While your shopping, bombs are dropping! (good for marching down Broadway)
-"Bush le gusta la gasolina!" (Bush likes gasoline)
-"Out in Baghdad, They call it MUUURRDDAAAARRR....Welcome to Iraq!"

Zino along for the ride, scoping out the march, but ultimately content just gettin bonked in the face with that red balloon, laughing, and then gettin bonked.
Adjoa, breastfeeding and keeping the crowd energized all at once. That's one multi-tasking revolutionary...
